Milwaukee Brewers sixth ranked prospect Carlos Rodriguez made his MLB debut on Tuesday, June 11 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He pitched just 3.2 innings in his debut, surrendered seven hits, allowed two earned runs, and struck out four. Toronto ended up winning the game 3-0 and handed Rodriguez the loss, but here we will focus on five numbers to know regarding his MLB debut.
12 different starting pitchers have been used by Milwaukee Brewers this season.
Carlos Rodriguez starting for the Brewers against the Blue Jays marked the 12th different pitcher they have used this season to begin a game. This is currently tied with the Atlanta Braves for the most in the league. It also is closing in a franchise record in which the Seattle Pilots used 17 different starting pitchers during the 1969 season. On seven different occasions the Brewers have used 13 different starting pitchers in a year with the most recent being 2017.
Eight different players have made their MLB debuts with the Milwaukee Brewers this season.
The Brewers are a young team, but eight MLB debuts within the first three months of the regular season is a lot. Outside of Carlos Rodriguez the others to debut this year are Jackson Chourio, Oliver Dunn, Tobias Myers, Tyler Black, Chris Roller, James Meeker, and Robert Gasser. Only the Oakland Athletics have had more MLB debuts this season (nine).
Carlos Rodriguez is just the third player in franchise history to wear #00.
It’s been over two decades since a Milwaukee player last wore #00, but that is the number Carlos Rodriguez has elected to be on the back of his jersey. The last Brewers player to wear #00 was also a pitcher in Curtis Leskanic (2000-2001). Jeffrey Leonard in 1988 is the only other player to have worn this number.
Carlos Rodriguez is the first Nicaraguan born player to play in the big leagues for the Brewers.
While Carlos Rodriguez was born in Nicaragua he attended High School at Miami Christian School and went to College at Florida SouthWestern. He was selected in the MLB draft by Milwaukee in 2021 in the sixth round. Regardless he did represent Team Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic and he became the first Nicaraguan born player to play in the big leagues for the Brewers while also just being the 16th in MLB history.
Six different pitches were thrown by Carlos Rodriguez during his MLB debut.
On the mound Carlos Rodriguez is not over powering velocity wise, but he does throw a lot of different pitches. He relies on mixing them effectively and commanding them in the zone in order to keep hitters off balance. During his MLB debut he threw 71 total pitches with six different pitch types being tracked. Overall he threw 16 four seam fastballs, 15 sliders, 14 sinkers, 11 cutters, 10 change ups, and five curveballs.
Although Rodriguez would have liked his MLB debut to go better he did keep the Brewers in the game and navigated through multiple innings with runners on base. With how depleted Milwaukee’s pitching staff is he should get another opportunity to start for them.
