The Milwaukee Brewers will need starting pitching help this offseason, and one of the potential targets could be Blake Snell. Snell is an unrestricted free agent, and he will have a ton of suitors when the offseason begins. One of the reasons why the Brewers need starting pitching help is because Brandon Woodruff is going to miss most of 2024 after shoulder surgery.
He was one of the key pieces in the Brewers rotation in 2023, and it was one of the reasons why they went 92-70 and won the National League Central division. Woodruff is 30 years old. Last year, he had a 5-1 record with a 2.28 ERA and had 74 strikeouts. His WHIP was 0.82.
The Milwaukee Brewers can use some internal options to replace him in 2024, but why not take it to another level and go after an elite starter? Snell is also 30 years old, and the Brewers are in win-now mode. Last season with the San Diego Padres, he had a 14-9 record with a 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts. His WHIP was 1.19.
Milwaukee Brewers Should Pursue Blake Snell But It Appears As if the Seattle Mariners Could be the Front Runners For Him
General manager Matt Arnold should make a push to sign Snell this offseason because he is a former Cy Young Award winner. However, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, he believes there are reasons why the Seattle Mariners might be the best landing spot for him.
Nightengale said:
“The Seattle Mariners’ shrewdest move this winter could be signing Padres free-agent ace Blake Snell, a Seattle native, and trading some of their young pitching depth for position players.”
This would be interesting for the Seattle Mariners because they just missed the playoffs in the American League this season after making it to the playoffs a season ago. However, heading into next season, Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, and Colin Rea will be some of the starters in the rotation for the Brewers.
Brandon Woodruff would have been another starter in the rotation, and then the Milwaukee Brewers would have a potential battle for the fifth starter. This is a perfect reason why they need to go after Blake Snell as a free agent. Milwaukee has two holes in the starting rotation entering the 2024 regular season. This is one of the things Matt Arnold needs to address this offseason, and he should try and find a way to sign him. A couple of other teams that can sign him this offseason are the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Mets.
