The Milwaukee Brewers lost left-handed reliever Bennett Sousa as he was claimed off of waivers by the Detroit Tigers. He was subsequently optioned to the Toledo Mud Hens. His departure opens up a 40-man roster spot in which there are a few intriguing options for the Brewers to consider.
Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Bennett Sousa has been claimed off of waivers by the Detroit Tigers.
Bennett Sousa was acquired via trade by the Brewers earlier this year when the Cincinnati Reds gave him up in exchange for cash and international bonus money. He appeared in just two games for Milwaukee in which he surrendered four earned runs. After his short big league stint he spent a lengthy amount of time on the IL with nerve irritation and was just activated by the team a few days ago.
The timing of his departure from the Brewers is interesting because starting pitcher Adrian Houser was recently placed on the IL. Houser’s next scheduled start was going to be Saturday, September 2 in which at that time rosters will have expanded by two. This essentially gives Milwaukee three active roster spots to fill over the next few days and one 40-man roster spot.
It is possible that the open 40-man roster spot goes to starting pitcher Robert Gasser in order to fill the void in the starting rotation. The southpaw is one prospect who is viewed as MLB ready by several and he could be an impact pitcher for the Brewers. Julio Teheran is also an option for he is on the mend and could re-join Milwaukee in the near future as well.
