April has been a good month for the Milwaukee Brewers over the past few seasons. From a record standpoint 2023 was no different and the team had a lot of success. They didn’t lose back-to-back games until April 23 and they won six out of nine total series.
Despite the winning record the Brew Crew had to deal with numerous injuries, there was a lot of roster shuffling, and they even executed a few trades. In this article we will examine five numbers that you should know from the first month of the season.
Five five numbers to know from the Brewers first month of the season.
Brewers April number to know #1: .643 winning percentage
The Brewers 18-10 record equates to a .643 winning percentage. Entering May this is the fifth best in all of baseball. .643 is also the franchise’s fourth best winning percentage through April. Only the 1987 (.857), 2014 (.714), and 2022 (.681) teams finished with a better winning percentage.
Brewers April number to know #2: 10 players on the injured list
To end April, 10 Milwaukee players finished on the injured list. Jason Alexander, Aaron Ashby, Adrian Houser, Justin Wilson, and Tyrone Taylor all started the regular season out, but five more joined them. The biggest offensive blow was outfielder Garrett Mitchell. Luis Urias, Brandon Woodruff, Gus Varland, and Matt Bush all finished the month on the injured list as well.
Brewers April number to know #3: 3 trades were executed
With the injuries and constant roster shuffling, the Brewers were also adding and subtracting players via trade as well. Three April trades were conducted in which the Crew gained two players and lost one. They gained Trevor Megill and Bennett Sousa while losing Javy Guerra. It is also worth mentioning that they added reliever J.B. Bukauskas through a waiver claim.
Brewers April number to know #4: 4th best ERA in baseball
Despite losing Brandon Woodruff and having an unproven bullpen, Milwaukee finished the first month with the fourth best ERA in baseball at 3.41. Only the Atlanta Braves (3.37), Houston Astros (3.22), and Tampa Bay Rays (3.10) finished above them.
Brewers April number to know #5: 8 holds from Peter Strzelecki
Peter Strzelecki was poised for an increased role in 2023 and his eight holds in April is evidence that he should be the eighth inning set up man going forward. Only one other reliever finished with more holds than he did. That pitcher was Colin Holderman of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
