Last week, it was announced that former Milwaukee Brewers trade acquisition CC Sabathia was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. In 17 starts with Milwaukee, Sabathia went 11-2 with a sparkling 1.65 ERA while throwing seven complete games, which included three shutouts.
As fans remember well, his production in the second half of the 2008 season propelled the Brewers to their first postseason appearance in 26 years.
But not all trades that Milwaukee has made have had such a profound impact on the team. In fact, some have gone down as some of the worst moves in franchise history.
The Milwaukee Brewers Traded Kolten Wong for Abraham Toro and Jesse Winker in December of 2022
In December of 2022, the Brewers made the decision to trade second baseman Kolten Wong to the Seattle Mariners. The move was made so that Brice Turang could take over second base, which ended up being a great move for the franchise.
However, the return that Milwaukee received for Wong was disappointing, to say the least. Jesse Winker was acquired to be the team’s designated hitter, but hit just .199/.320/.247 with one home run and 23 RBI in 61 games.
To make matters worse, Winker became yet another Brewer killer in the postseason with a big performance against Milwaukee while playing for the New York Mets.
Former Milwaukee Brewers Infielder Abraham Toro Signed with the Boston Red Sox
The other player that Milwaukee received in exchange for Wong was infielder Abraham Toro. At the time of the trade, he was coming off a season in which he hit just .189/.239/.324 in 109 games with Seattle.
In nine games with the Brewers, he hit .444/.524/.778 with two home runs and nine RBI. With Triple-A Nashville, he hit .291/.374/.471 with eight home runs and 58 RBI in 96 games.
Despite solid numbers, Milwaukee had a plan on the infield which did not include him. He was, therefore, expendable and traded to the Oakland A’s for Chad Patrick.
In 94 games with Oakland last year, he Toro hit .240/.293/.350 with six home runs and 26 RBI.
Now, the former Brewers infielder is headed to the American League East.
According to Patrick McAvoy of Sports Illustrated, Toro has signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox:
“The Boston Red Sox have signed infielder Abraham Toro to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league Spring Training,”
For his career, Toro has a slash line of .220/.285/.353.
