It was a frustrating night on offense for the Marquette Golden Eagles as usual scorers Stevie Mitchell and David Joplin failed to produce their usual numbers, leading to a loss to St. John’s Red Storm.
It was the second straight loss by the Golden Eagles after they lost to the UConn Huskies.
Marquette, which recently fell out of Top 10 in AP ranking, slipped to no. 3 in the Big East standings with a 9-3 record, 18-5 overall. St. John’s retain the no. 1 spot with the win.
Mitchell scored just two points in the game on 1-out-of-6 shooting. It is a continuation of his bad night against the Huskies where he only scored 6 points due to the physicality of the opponents.
Joplin’s shots were also limited, taking just six shots leading to five points. His lackluster performance has more to do with foul trouble throughout the game.
One of the best defensive possessions you’ll see all year. Marquette wants/needs to score quick, but they just can’t. The Johnnies are everywhere pic.twitter.com/ZQYCb0MYZP

Kam Jones failed to break to his season average as he only managed to score 15 points while Chase Ross.
From the bench, Zaide Lowery and Royce Parham combined for 20 points.
Stevie Mitchell and co failed to protect the rebound
Main suspect for the loss is the team’s inability to grab rebounds. The New York-based basketball program outrebounded their visitors, 50-28.
This allowed St. John’s guards to create more for the team and control the tempo.
The Golden Eagles hang with their hosts in the first half, 31-30.
However, they entered the second half sluggish by allowing the Red Storm to make an 8-0 run.
They were still in the game with the succeeding minutes separating the two teams by 1-2 possesions.
By the 4:30 mark, Marquette were able to tie the game at 57.
That’s when things went ugly for them. The team failed to convert a field goal until the final whistle while allowing Red Storm penetrated their defense for multiple easy lay-ups.
The Golden Eagles’ tough stretch is not over as they will visit next the Creighton Bluejays who are currently sitting at no. 2 in Big East and are on a hot streak, winning their last seven games.
