Marquette Golden Eagles women’s basketball had their toughest test of the season when they hosted Paige Bueckers and UConn Huskies and as many expected, the latter cruised to a victory, 77-45, to keep their Big East conference record clean.
Marquette coach Cara Consuegra has a simple explanation why they lost.
“The inexperience in our team, most of them have not played anybody that defends at that level and so obviously I thought that was the biggest takeaway from the game. Not just the turnovers, but our inability to run offense the way we want to run it because we just really couldn’t get to our spots,” said Consuegra who was hired on April this year.
The boxscore reflects what Consuegra said. The team had 21 turnovers in the game as their guards were pressured by Huskiess defenders.
Skylar Forbes had herself a night after scoring 20 points, the third time she has done it this season.
Marquette falls to 9-4 with the loss.
Huskies coach’s game plan versus Marquette Golden Eagles
Forbes may have scored 20 points but she might have gotten more if only Huskies coach Geno Aureimma had a different plan.
The 6’3 forward is a marked player for the Huskies as Auriemma told his players to disrupt the flow of her point guards to prevent her from doing her thing, something the Huskis coach said he is very aware of.
“Going into the game it was how we were going to guard when she was in the lane, and our bigger lineup I thought would help us do that,” Auriemma said. “But she’s just as comfortable out on the perimeter.”
The defense was enough for the Huskies as their superstar Bueckers had a hard time in the game, scoring just 12 points on 4 of 12 shooting.
