After the 2023 NFL Draft, the Packers, like any other NFL team, signed a group of undrafted free agents (UDFAs). When it comes to UDFAs, you are just taking a flyer, and maybe one of them could pan out. A good example is Yosh Ninjman, who signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and is now a starter for the Packers. It seems like Brenton Cox from the University of Florida, who the Packers signed as an UDFA this year, is getting a lot of buzz. From reports, it seems the Packers might have gotten the biggest steal in Cox.
The question is, how good is Brenton Cox?
UDFA Brenton Cox is Very Powerful
One thing that you’ll notice about Brenton Cox is that he has a lot of raw power in his game. He seems to bully offensive linemen as he just throws them out of the way with his strength alone. One thing for sure is when it comes to Cox; he will not get overpowered by many opposing offensive linemen. The Packers could use more of that on defense, especially against the run, as they have struggled to stop it for many years. If the UDFA makes the roster, he will bring a physical presence to the Packers’ defense that they have been lacking.
Cox Had A Dominant Game Against Alabama In 2021
Arguably the best game of Cox’s college career was against Alabama in 2021. Despite the loss, he was an absolute beast in that game. He had a sack and was getting constant pressure on Bryce Young which made him pretty uncomfortable in the pocket most of the game. He was constantly in the backfield and making plays against the run.
Also, he looked pretty good in pass coverage that game as well. In coverage, he knocked down John Metchie, but it drew a penalty. Nonetheless, it was pretty impressive how comfortable Brenton Cox looked in pass coverage. He almost had a game-changing interception that game, but he dropped it. His great game against Alabama showed what potential he has. Hopefully, he reaches it.
When Dismissed From Florida, The Defense Struggled
Due to off-field issues and other disciplinary reasons, Cox was dismissed from the Florida football team. It was very unfortunate, but when he was gone, the defense struggled. With Cox no longer on the defense, the pass rush struggled, and there was no constant pressure on the quarterback. In addition, the run defense suffered without him. A good example was against Florida State. The Florida defense was getting run over when Cox was not there. Simply put, the Florida defense without Brenton Cox had a hard time stopping the run and getting after the quarterback. It just goes to show how good he really was before he was kicked off the Florida Football team.
Teams Were High On Brenton Cox & It Was Shocking He Was a UDFA
Believe it or not, teams were pretty high on Brenton Cox in the Draft. However, him being kicked off two college football teams really turned almost everyone away from him. The character concerns are really the only reason he was a UDFA. If not for that, Cox would have been drafted pretty high. The best case for him is he would be a late day-two or early day-three pick.
The talent and tools are certainly there for Cox, and many teams would take a chance with him if he did not get kicked off two teams. The Packers see the potential in UDFA Brandon Cox and are giving him a shot. If he stays focused, he has a chance to make the team and have an impact on the Packers’ defense this year.

I can remember Cox having two good games, just too slow and at times out of shape. Surprised GB would draft. Hoping we can fill this position at Fla this year. Won’t know until 1st game at Utah…
