The Houston Astros are still hoping that Alex Bregman will choose to return to H-Town. But as Bregman continues to be a free agent, the Astros made an under-the-radar move on Wednesday – their first in the month of February.
The Astros announced via their X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) that they are re-signing outfielder Ben Gamel, who also used to play for the Milwaukee Brewers.
More from Brian McTaggart of MLB.com:
A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand the deal is for $1.2 million. Gamel will receive a $200,000 signing bonus, and the other $1 million is not guaranteed unless he makes the team out of Spring Training.

Gamel played for the New York Mets and the Houston Astros in the 2024 MLB season. After being released by the Mets, Gamel was picked up by the Astros but he was not able to finish the year healthy due to a left fibula fracture that he suffered during a September game against the Los Angeles Angels. In 38 total games in 2024 (20 with the Astros), Gamel slashed 247/.384/.333 with a homer and four RBIs in 99 total plate appearances.
Apart from the Astros, Mets and Brewers, Gamel also played for the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Guardians, New York Yankees and San Diego Padres.
