After a fantastic Week 1 game between Catholic Memorial and Franklin, we head up to the Fox Valley for Week 2! This week’s high school football game of the week is long-time rivals Appleton East Patriots and Appleton West Terrors. Here’s what you need to know about the teams.
About Appleton East
It could be another rebuilding year for the Patriots. After going 0-9 last season, the Patriots will be looking for a turnaround year. East fell to the top-ranked team in Division 3 Menasha 35-14 last week.
Senior quarterback Chase Nelson leads the Patriots. He was 5-9 for 79 yards and one touchdown while carrying the ball 15 times for 55 yards (all stats courtesy of wissports.net). Nelson has the dual-threat ability and will need to use both Friday night.
Unfortunately, the Patriots gave up over 300 total yards to Menasha quarterback AJ Korth (250 on the ground). East has to contain Appleton West when they choose the run the ball. They must also keep the score lower and not get into a shootout.
About Appleton West
After just falling short of the playoffs last season, the Appleton West Terrors had an impressive 44-21 win last week against Manitowoc Lincoln. It’s the first step to a postseason berth.
Junior quarterback Ryder Hoffman was the man last week. According to wissports.net, Hoffman went 21-31 for 294 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball six times for 66 yards.
At least six receivers had at least 20 yards, as well. Senior Ben Vallafakey led the way with six catches for 88 yards for Appleton West. He also had six carries for 91 yards. The Hoffman-Vallafakey duo could be a big part of this game.
