Even though the Green Bay Packers are on the verge of a playoff berth, it does not feel like this Packers team will not go much further than a first round out. It was a rollercoaster of a regular season which might end up putting Matt Lafleur on the hot seat. Where should the Packers look if this is the case?
The Packers should look to Hire Bill Belichick Next Season
Now this would only be able to happen if the New England Patriots were to decide to part ways with Belichick and according to long tenured Patriots reporter Tom E. Curran, the decision to make a head coaching change was made after the Patriots 10-6 loss to the Colts in Germany. If this is true, the next question to answer is why would this be a good fit for the Green Bay Packers? There are a few reasons why this could make sense for both parties involved.
Bill Belichick could Help Fix the Packers Defense
Bill Belichick is arguably the best defensive head coach in NFL history. Despite a few losing seasons since Tom Brady’s departure, Belichick has always put out a good product on the defensive side. This year despite having a 4-12 record, the Patriots defense have put up good numbers. The Patriots are sixth in the NFL in average yards allowed and have allowed 21.8 points a game. With an abysmal offense like New England this stat is actually more impressive then one might think. There’s no doubt the Packers defense has struggled this year and it has cost them a few very winnable games. This Packers defense has playmakers, but the scheme has not been right this year. Belichick might be able to turn it around. He has done more with a lot less in New England as they lost their two best defensive players in Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez early in the season.
Why would Belichick want to Coach the Packers?
If you know Bill Belichick, you know he loves his football history. The Green Bay Packers are one of if not the most historic team in the NFL. Bill Belichick might be fascinated by the idea of coaching where the great Vince Lombardi did and bringing the Super Bowl trophy back home. He also might be fascinated by the defensive roster and what he could do to make them great. Belichick is also only 26 wins away from the all time wins record. This team is trending in the right direction and would definitely be expected to win 10 plus games if he was the head coach. This team could help him get there much quicker than the New England Patriots. Belichick would have to give up the idea of being a GM and the Packers would most likely have to trade for him. These are two major obstacles but if this did happen, it would shake of the NFC for years to come.
