Green Bay Packers defensive back Xavier McKinney continues to prove that he’s a great offseason pickup for the NFC North division franchise. In just five weeks with his new team, McKinney has even managed to make franchise history.
For the fifth game in a row in Green Bay uniform, the 26-year-old safety came away with an interception when he picked off a Matthew Stafford pass in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
And with that interception, McKinney has become the first Packers player ever to have an INT in his first five games with Green Bay, as announced by the team on X (formerly Twitter).
“The first Packers player to record an INT in each of his first five games with the team. X is just like that.”
Xavier McKinney has been excellent for the Green Bay Packers so far in 2024
In addition to that franchise feat, McKinney is also the first player since the merger in 1970 to have an interception in each of his first five outings with a club, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).
On top of his interceptions, McKinney has six passes defended and 13 solo tackles so far in the 2024 NFL regular season.
“Those were plays that we need and that’s complementary football,” McKinney said of his pick following the Packers’ 24-19 win over the Rams. “And we did that very well today. I’m glad the offense went down and was able to score,” McKinney said about the turnovers.
The Packers signed McKinney to a four-year deal worth $67 million back in March after he played his first five seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants.
