After the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Playoffs, their attention should now shift to looking at areas where they need to improve. Interestingly, there are already a few options they can consider as they gear up for an interesting free agency and offseason.
For the Packers to be a playoff team yearly and potentially Super Bowl contenders, they need to have a consistent defense that won’t just suddenly collapse on them.
Green Bay Packers Can Trade for Washington Commanders DT Jonathan Allen
With that being said, the Packers could trade for Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen this offseason in order to address their defensive issues. Of course Allen is not the full solution to their problem, but he’s a big piece of the puzzle–one who can actually help anchor the defense.
It’s also not impossible for the Packers to land the Commanders Pro Bowler, especially with Washington expected to be more active in the trade market this offseason. According to a mock trade proposed by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, Green Bay could send a 2024 second-round pick and 2024 fourth-round pick to acquire Allen’s services.
Per Kay: The Green Bay Packers will want to throw their hat into the ring for Allen’s services. While they’ve quickly started flourishing in the post-Aaron Rodgers era, the Packers could use more help on the defensive front. Even on the heels of a strong regular season finish and Wild Card round victory, the Packers still have a real need in the defensive trenches after allowing a lowly 126.3 rushing yards per game and tallying a middling 45 sacks in 2023
Allen would be an ideal solution to both issues and can slide over to defensive end in Green Bay’s 3-4 front. It would likely cost the club the better of of its two Round 2 draft selections this year plus more to get a deal done, but parting with these picks would well be worth the value Allen will add to this defense.
It remains to be seen what the Green Bay Packers will actually do in the offseason. But after an incredible playoff run, they should be an alluring destination for players who want to compete for the postseason and Super Bowl.
With a young quarterback expected to develop with the team and a well-established system in place, Allen and several others players might be convinced to head to Green Bay for a better shot at the title.
