The Green Bay Packers have made multiple tough decisions over the last few years. Trading away Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers is back to back off-season certainly thrust the franchise into a new era. That era is led by multiple young and talented stars on offense. Jordan Love, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft make up a large portion of that group. All of those players (with the exception of Jordan Love) were added to this team within the last 1-2 seasons.
Unfortunately, Aaron Jones who is 29-years-old could be another tough decision the team has to make. His age, coupled with his injuries, and his $17 million cap hit next year may make it near impossible to retain the star running back. If that winds up being the case, there is one name floating around that the Packers could very easily be interested in.
The Green Bay Packers Could Target Dallas Cowboys’ Star Running Back Tony Pollard Amid Aaron Jones’ Uncertain Future
Spotrac contract analyst Mike Ginnitti explained the likely outcome of Tony Pollard this week by pointing out that the Cowboys have other priorities ahead of Pollard—namely, star quarterback Dak Prescott and star receiver CeeDee Lamb, who could both be the highest paid players in their respective positions.
The Packers may be able to take advantage of that opportunity in NFL free agency:
“The Cowboys have contracts to hand out left and right this Winter/Spring, including a couple of blockbusters for Prescott & Lamb. A $13M second franchise tag for Pollard seems inconceivable right now, but so does any sort of multi-year guaranteed extension if we’re being honest.
Pollard hits the open market, seeking a cap adjusted version of Miles Sanders’ free agent deal (3 years, $20.5M). Green Bay, Chicago, & Buffalo are listening,” Ginnitti wrote.
Would The Packers Have Interest In 26-Year-Old Tony Pollard?
It is possible that the Packers are the team most likely to offer Pollard a better deal than the Cowboys can. As you may recall, the Packers surprised many when they pursued a trade for the Colts’ then-holdout running back Jonathan Taylor during the off-season. With Taylor’s age, the Packers considered him a target for the future of their team. Something they invested heavily in over the last few drafts.
Pollard is coming off a season where he had more than 1,300 all purpose yards and 12 total touchdowns. So far in 2023 he has nearly 900 all purpose yards and four total touchdowns with six games to go in the season.
