Prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that he wanted his team to return to its days as a quarterback factory. When Brett Favre was in the prime of his career, the Packers churned out several backup quarterbacks who went on to become high-quality starters in the NFL.
Among these players were Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, and Aaron Brooks.
Needless to say, Gutekunst may have to wait another year or so before his dream becomes a reality. The two quarterbacks he selected to compete as Jordan Love‘s backup were both cut before the season began. Sean Clifford is currently on the Packers’ practice squad and Michael Pratt is on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Malik Willis is currently the backup quarterback in Green Bay.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Tim Boyle Has Bounced Around the NFL
While the Packers have not produced any starting-caliber quarterbacks besides their own in a number of years, they have found success in drafting and developing capable backups. One of these is Tim Boyle, whose constant presence on NFL rosters shows how much he is valued as a professional.
So valued, in fact, that the now journeyman quarterback has displaced $40 million starter Daniel Jones on the depth chart of the New York Giants:

This season, Jones has a 63.3% completion percentage, 2,070 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 79.4.
As one can see from the post above, the Giants have named Tommy DeVito as their starter going forward. Packers fans will remember him from Green Bay’s disastrous meltdown on defense when they played New York last year.
After Jordan Love marched the offense down the field for the go-ahead score and less than two minutes remaining, Joe Barry’s defense allowed DeVito and the Giants offense to get into field goal position for the game-winning kick.
In that game, DeVito completed 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions. He also ran the ball10 times for 71 yards and was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Tim Boyle Constantly Finds Work in the NFL
Boyle signed as an undrafted free agent with the Packers in 2018. He made the 53-man roster behind Aaron Rodgers and backup quarterback DeShon Kizer that year, but did not see the field at all.
In 2019, he became Rodgers’ primary backup, a job he held in 2020 as well even though the Packers had selected Love in the first round of the NFL Draft that year.
In 2021, Green Bay decided to make Love the backup and Boyle was non-tendered. He was not out of work long, though.
Since leaving the Packers, Boyle has spent time with the Detroit Lions (2021), Chicago Bears (2022), New York Jets (2023), Houston Texans (2023), and Miami Dolphins (2024).
The Giants are his seventh NFL team in six years.
