The Green Bay Packers have some new decisions to make thanks to a new NFL rule. The league announced yesterday that teams will be able to carry a third quarterback on gameday and it won’t count against the roster. This opens up 32 quarterback spots across the league. One analyst suggested that the Packers could become a possible suitor for former top 10 pick, Ryan Tannehill.
Green Bay Packers To Target Ryan Tannehill?
Here’s the case for it according to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports.
“Tannehill is more likely to sit tight as a placeholder in Tennessee on the final year of his contract, but at a steep salary, with the Titans just trading up to draft Will Levis at No. 33 overall, it’s very possible the team could solicit offers for its incumbent starter. Coach Mike Vrabel hasn’t committed to Tannehill being on the roster come Week 1, and while the Titans would certainly be more likely to contend for another playoff run if he stays, it’s clear new general manager Ran Carthon is thinking about the future.”
The Packers probably need a veteran in the quarterback room especially now that they can have a third one on gameday. Tannehill is not the long-term answer and the Titans will most likely want to get Levis reps as soon as possible. This means that Tannehill could be available for cheap. Should the Packers explore this option?
Other Options At Quarterback
I think Sean Clifford makes it on the roster. Everything the front office has said about him post-draft makes me think he is almost a lock. The third spot is interesting. Danny Etling is probably the front-runner thanks to his familiarity with the organization. However, I like the idea of bringing in some help for Love. Tannehill would also be able to come in a bring stability to the position if injuries happen. He has played in big playoff games and wouldn’t be a deer in the headlights if called upon. The question would be what would the Packers have to give up to get him? Gutekunst likes his draft picks and wouldn’t want to part with premium capital.
The Green Bay Packers might fully embrace the youth movement and decide that Tom Clements is enough of a veteran to teach all the youngsters. As team activities begin, keep an eye out for who emerges in the quarterback room.
