Green Bay Packers: Should Head Coach Matt LaFleur give up play-calling duties?

The Green Bay Packers have struggled offensively for the past month, and while many fans are pointing to the youth Green Bay has on offense, is it a fair question to ask if Head Coach Matt LaFleur is holding this offense back?

There have been too many occasions this year where Matt LaFleur will have Jordan Love settle for a short-intermediate throw rather than take at least a deep shot or two down the field.

LaFleur lately has been calling an offensive game plan as if he’s terrified his young quarterback will make a mistake, but how are we supposed to know how good Jordan Love’s supposed to be if Matt LaFleur calls for short 5-10-yard routes?

The Green Bay Packers should be much better offensively. Instead, they are currently in the middle of the pack. Granted, they haven’t had their full arsenal of weapons, with Christian Watson and Aaron Jones missing time, but good coaches get the most out of young skill position players, and LaFleur hasn’t done that this year.

Why Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur shouldn’t even consider giving up play-calling duties.

A potential change like this mid-season would be catastrophic for the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay doesn’t have any talented assistants who would do a better job than LaFleur is doing currently.

It’s also not all on LaFleur, as he’s talked about dialing up perfect plays, but the offense hasn’t executed.

The penalty gave the Detroit Lions a first down and eventually a touchdown score.

Making this decision this early in the season would signal a panic move. When Mike McCarthy relinquished play-calling responsibilities to Tom Clements in 2015, it was during the offseason, and Green Bay’s offense sputtered without Jordy Nelson in the lineup, it was clear that Tom Clements wasn’t a better option to call plays than Mike McCarthy.

It’s the same situation here if Matt LaFleur decided to give up play-calling duties. Not only would Green Bay’s offense falter, but it would also take a steep-nose dive to the point where the fans will have to start the tank for Caleb Williams’ campaign.
