The Green Bay Packers have had some great receivers and tight ends over the past 20 years. Devante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Randall Cobb, Jermicheal Finley, and others. Now we have a new set of young receivers and tight ends to go along with a new young quarterback. No one knows how Jordan Love is going to do in his first year as a starter. It has been the main question for the Green Bay Packers all offseason. According to some reports, expectations for him are not that high. However, Love has to throw to receivers, so I’m here to discuss which player could be his go to guy.
Current Green Bay Packers Receivers
I could list every receiver on the Green Bay Packers roster, but that’s what their main page is for. Instead, I will talk about who I think is going to play in every game barring injury: Christian Watson, Remeo Doubs, and rookie Jayden Reed. As of today, Reed is has not signed a rookie contract yet, but we all know he will be on the roster officially come kickoff. I don’t think any receiver will beat him out for the WR3 spot unless someone shows up in training camp and preseason. This group is just so young. Watson and Doubs are the most experienced in the group and they both are barely going into their second year.
Out of the three receivers I mentioned, I believe Watson has the best chance to become Love’s favorite option. Doubs is a slightly better route runner in my opinion, but Watson is just a playmaker. His speed makes me think he can take it to the house on any given play. It can be either on deep balls, or short slants and drag routes where he just outruns defenders. Jayden Reed can do the same thing, but he isn’t as refined or reliable in my opinion.
Current Green Bay Packers Tight Ends
Same thing as the last section, I’m only covering the two tight ends I think are going to play a majority of the snaps. You could argue that Musgrave will be TE1 and so will play more snaps while Kraft only plays some. I won’t deny that could end up being the case. However, I think that the Green Bay Packers are now going to run a lot of two tight end sets. I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up in the top 5 in the league of having two or more tight ends on the field. They could end up playing like the Ravens, who rely so much on their tight ends.
Of the two tight ends, I think Musgrave has the better chance of being Love’s go to guy. He is a better receiving option and is just a more polished player. Kraft could be great as well, but I think it will take a year or two for him to reach his ceiling. And then there were two.
Who will be Jordan Love’s Number One Option?
Now that I’ve settled on one receiver and one tight end, it’s time to say who I think will be Love’s main guy. Every quarterback has their go to guy that they throw to when they have nowhere else to go. Someone they trust above everyone else. Rodgers had Jordy Nelson and then Devante Adams. Who will Jordan Love’s trust option be? If it were up to me, I would rather Love not have one and just throw to whoever is open instead of relying on one receiver. But I know that every quarterback has a guy they throw it to even when they probably shouldn’t.
I think Luke Musgrave will be our number one option. While Watson should be better this year, I think Musgrave is going to be too much of a mismatch for linebackers and safeties. Plus, I think Love will feel more comfortable throwing in the middle of the field than throwing outside of the numbers. Because of this, our rookie tight end should end up being who Love looks for when pressured. The Green Bay Packers offense is going to be different this year. Everyone has their expectations on how it will be, including Tyler Brooke and Dusty Evely in their video. I for one am excited to see how his chemistry with the receivers and tight ends grows.
