The unknown is the worst place for an NFL team to be at the quarterback position. That’s where the Green Bay Packers are with Jordan Love this offseason. It’s the first time the Packers have been in that situation since Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets in 2008. The Packers needed a little time then to be patient with Aaron Rodgers. A new report states the organization is “preaching patience” with Love this offseason after Rodgers was traded to the Jets.
Matt LaFleur hinted at the League Annual Metting that the transition could be a little bumpy for Love. LaFleur said the team needed to temper their expectations for Love this season. General manager Brian Gutekunst hinted at the Packers’ actual knowledge of Love’s skillset with the fifth-year extension offer. Love signed a prove-it deal through the 2024 season.

The Green Bay Packers stress “patience” for Jordan Love
According to Dianna Russini in an on-air report with ESPN, the attitude of the Packers organization is that their former first-round pick has shown enough flair on the practice field to earn the starting job. But the team doesn’t expect him to come in and be, well, Rodgers for Favre in their prime this season:
“Everything that I’m hearing is in terms of the confidence [Love has], they believe in him, but they are preaching patience. Patience throughout the entire organization. No, he’s not going to be able to step out on the field and immediately light this up. I’s going to take some time, ust becuase he hasn’t had that much time out on the field.”

That’s fair enough to start the season. But how long of a leash Love will be given by his teammates and fans might not be what the organization hopes. As a former NFL linebacker who worked with Tom Brady, Tedy Bruschi pointed out in the clip with Russini that Love is a former first-round pick who has practiced for three years while learning from one of the all-time great quarterbacks. Rodgers had two NFL MVP seasons for Love to watch at practice, in games, and in the quarterback room breaking down tape.
Love deserves some time to get his feet wet early in the season. But he must show quickly that he can be in Green Bay, or the Packers will have to move on.
