This off-season, the Green Bay Packers will have to make some tough roster decisions. Despite 2023 being an incredible building block, some changes are likely in store for this franchise. The evidence of that became even clearer today.
The Green Bay Packers Show They’re Unlikely To Bring Back One All-Pro
Per Packers’ salary cap expert Ken Ingalls:
If the Packers wanted to bring back Savage, Nijman, or Nixon for 2024 it would have been most cost effective to have extended them before their void provisions kicked in.
Extending would have saved:
- -Savage: $4.1M
- -Nijman: $1.9M
- -Nixon: $1.1M
They didn’t – They are likely gone.
As a 26-year-old, Nixon could be a great asset for the Packers in the next few seasons. In addition to 80 tackles, he had 0.5 sacks, one interception, and six pass deflections this season. Although Nixon was more of a third cornerback on the roster this season, he had to step up into bigger roles when needed.
While it isn’t a closed door, it is fairly surprising to see the Packers choose not to re-sign him in a situation that would have saved them money in the long run. If they had intentions on keeping him beyond the 2023 season (which many thought they would) getting a deal done would’ve been a priority.
Robin Adams of Wisconsin Sports Heroics highlighted one quote from Nixon following their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers:
In 2022, Nixon led the NFL with 35 kick returns for 1,009 yards, one of which was a 105-yard return for a touchdown. This past year, he led the NFL with 30 kick returns for 782 yards (his 26.1 yards per return also led the league). Nixon was named First Team All Pro in both seasons.
Following their loss in San Francisco, Nixon was asked what the last two seasons have meant to him, and his response was very reflective:
“Man, that s**t mean everything to me. I feel like I grew so much as a person, not just as a football player. The moment I signed my contract and put that G on my helmet, it mean everything.
“They poured everything into me in this organization and I poured everything back into them, and two All Pros later…”
Nixon will certainly be a name to watch this off-season for both the Packers and the rest of the league.
