Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has trusted rookie wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks a lot throughout Wicks’s rookie season. He has been taking advantage of every opportunity this season when given to him. Wicks has played a lot enlarged to the injuries to wide receiver Christian Watson, who has missed five games this season because of a hamstring injury.
Love told Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated about why he likes Dontayvion Wicks:
“A lot. I think just his personality, how he approaches coming into work every week, finding ways to get better. He’s always asking questions, always asking if he’s in the right spot, and then I think he’s a guy who’s in his coach’s ear all the time, trying to find ways to get better. Obviously, you see what he does on the field. I think he’s a really good route-runner, really shifty guy, catches the ball really well and he’s making plays after the catch, he’s getting a lot of YAC right now. He’s just a tough guy. So, he’s doing a lot of really good things.”
Jordan Love has developed good chemistry with Wicks from the beginning of the regular season. He has played in 13 games this season for the Green Bay Packers and has caught 31 passes for 491 yards receiving and one touchdown. Dontayvion Wicks has been targeted 49 times this season and has averaged 15.8 yards per reception this season.
Dontayvion Wicks of the Green Bay Packers Has Been Getting Opened Easily This Season
According to Next Gen Stats this season, Wicks is averaging 3.1 yards of separation, and that has been a very good thing for him. He mentioned to Huber about him getting opened so easily this season:
“There’s a lot of bigger DBs in the league. It’s just tough on tough. Whoever’s the most physical and wants it more, that’s who’s going to get it. That’s something I go by. You’ve got to show me you’re tougher than me while we’re out there. Talking ain’t going to get it. It’s all in action.”
Wicks has been one of the most reliable wide receivers for Love this season. There is a reason why people like him better than Christian Watson.
Wicks has earned his way to be the third receiver for the rest of the season. Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs are also reliable. He has more potential for the Packers moving forward than most people realize.
