On Saturday, the Green Bay Packers and the NFL community as a whole was saddened to learn the news that long-time coach Dick Jauron passed away. He had been diagnosed with cancer recently and, unfortunately, it spread quickly. Jauron was 74 years old.
While he is best-known for his days as the head coach of the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills, Jauron also coached other NFL teams, whether it was as a defensive backs coach or defensive coordinator. So highly regarded was he that three different Packers head coaches retained him on their staffs after taking the job in Green Bay.
He initially joined the Packers as a secondary coach when Forrest Gregg was the head coach. He was then retained by Lindy Infante, and again by Mike Holmgren. Indeed, he did not leave Green Bay until he was given the opportunity to be the first defensive coordinator in Jacksonville Jaguars history.

In a phone call with Wisconsin Sports Heroics on Sunday morning, Packers Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown lamented the loss of Coach Jauron, one of the most-respected coaches in Green Bay on a staff that included five future NFL head coaches.
“Coach was, when he was with us, he was like a quiet storm. One of those coaches that quietly went about his work, but you knew what he was doing,” Brown said. “He deserved every moment of becoming a head coach. Being able to see him grow, some guys get into certain positions and they change. They get more power, and they change. He never did. Of course, we weren’t around him when he was with Chicago, but you see it, you hear it. He will be sorely missed.”
Jauron was the Packers defensive backs coach from 1986-1994. He worked with legendary Packers secondary players like Doug Evans, George Teague, Chuck Cecil, and LeRoy Butler.
Former Packers cornerback Tazim Tazem Wajed (Tim Watson), the father of current Packers wide receiver Christian Watson, also posted the following statement on X (formerly Twitter):
RIP to my 1st NFL position coach with the Packers. Jauron was definitely a technical teacher of the game who challenged DB’s to have excellent footwork, and to “attack the ball.” Except for my LOOOONG rookie preseason(very unlike today), I never really got to play for him.… https://t.co/lcY2pjl5Us

“RIP to my 1st NFL position coach with the Packers. Jauron was definitely a technical teacher of the game who challenged DB’s to have excellent footwork, and to “attack the ball.” Except for my LOOOONG rookie preseason(very unlike today), I never really got to play for him. BUT, he definitely prepared me for another technician in Herm Edwards! The true technical accountability coaches are valued entities of the NFL.”
There are, undoubtedly, hundreds of former players who feel the exact same way about losing Coach Jauron. He will be sorely missed by the NFL community.
