The Green Bay Packers are going to look much different in 2023. Of course, the massive Aaron Rodgers trade has captivated headlines all off-season. However, there are many other storylines for the 2023 Green Bay Packers that will change the outlook for the 2023 season. In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Packers took a number of playmakers for the offense and Jordan Love to work with. That could very likely leave one current player looking for a new team by the time the season starts.
Green Bay Packers Expected To Release Tight End Josiah Deguara
According to David Kenyon:
To be perfectly honest, there isn’t a hugely compelling name in Green Bay. But the Green Bay Packers might move on from 2020 third-rounder Josiah Deguara, who’s maxed out at a 35 percent snap share in three seasons. It can hardly be a positive sign that Green Bay recently drafted tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft, too.
Deguara could make a lot of sense for the Packers in both keeping him and moving on from him. He has a very reasonable contract for this season as a former third-round pick back in 2020. His cap hit is only $1.3 million for 2023, and he will be an unrestricted free agent following this season. He often plays an unconventional full back/tight end role on the offense, often doing the “dirty work” that goes unseen.
It will be interesting to see how/if Matt LaFleur is able to use three tight end sets in 2023. With Josiah Deguara, Tucker Kraft, and Luke Musgrave all on the field at the same time, there will be plenty of unique offensive sets LaFleur could exploit. However, Deguara only has 371 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his first three years in Green Bay. If his lack of production through the air continues, it may convince the Green Bay Packers front office to use that roster spot for someone else.
