Earlier today, it was reported that the Green Bay Packers have interviewed soon-to-be former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers for their own defensive line coach opening. Jason Rebrovich, who held the position in Green Bay last season, was recently fired after the defense was not as success at rushing opposing quarterbacks as the team had hoped they would be.
It has also been recently reported that the Chicago Bears have hired a new head coach, Ben Johnson, the former offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. With that change will come a plethora of others on Chicago’s coaching staff. Johnson will, understandably, want to bring in his own staff. This means, of course, that current Bears coaches are now looking for work.
And one of them is not looking very far away.
The Green Bay Packers Have Interviewed Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator Eric Washington
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the Packers have interviewed Eric Washington for their defensive line coach job. Washington served as Chicago’s defensive coordinator this past season:
The Packers interviewed Eric Washington for their vacant defensive line coach position, source tells @NFLonCBS. Washington served as the Bears defensive coordinator this past season and was with the Bills for four seasons before that.

2024 was Washington’s first year back in Chicago since he left the organization in 2011. From 2008-2009, he was a defensive assistant with the Bears. In 2010, he promoted to defensive line coach.
From 2011-2017, he was the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers. In 2018, they promoted him to defensive coordinator, a role he held until 2019.
As Jones notes above, Washington spent the four previous seasons before 2024 with the Buffalo Bills. From 2020-2021, he was their defensive line coach. In 2022, he added the title senior defensive assistant. Finally, in 2023, he was their assistant head coach as well as the defensive line coach.
While Chicago’s defense did not perform well overall in 2024, it is worth noting that, in 2023, the Bills ranked fourth in the NFL with 54 sacks.
