Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has officially been released by the New York Jets with a post-June 1 designation. While this makes him a free agent immediately, it allows New York to spread out his dead cap hit over the course of two seasons instead of one.
While his release became official just this past week, it has been known for weeks that the Jets were going to move on from the future Pro Football Hall of Famer. To replace Rodgers, New York has already signed former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Wants to Play for the Minnesota Vikings

When news broke that the Jets were planning to release Rodgers, it did not take long for fans and NFL analysts to start predicting what team he would play for in 2025, if he chose to play at all.
At the end of the day, though, there are just three NFL teams that appear to be in consideration for Rodgers’ services: the New York Giants, Steelers, and Minnesota Vikings.
And of those three, Rodgers wants to play for his former division rival. Per a report in The Athletic:
“Rodgers is hoping to sign with the Vikings, who went 14-3 in 2024 before suffering a first-round playoff defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Meanwhile, the Vikings have been strongly weighing the possibility of pursuing Rodgers as a replacement for 2024 starter Sam Darnold, who signed a three-year, $100 million free-agent deal Wednesday with the Seattle Seahawks.”
Minnesota does seem like it would be a good fit, at least from Rodgers’ perspective, as they were 14-3 last year and already have a great offense in place. Of course, signing with the Vikings would also reunite him with another Packers great, running back Aaron Jones.
But while the Giants and Steelers have both reciprocated interest in the four-time NFL MVP to varying degrees, Minnesota has not. At least not yet.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Wants a Decent Pay Day

Over the course of his 20-year career, Rodgers has made over $380 million. His last contract with the Jets was a three-year $112.5 million deal that paid him an annual salary of roughly $37.5 million a year.
Per that same report in The Athletic, the former Packers quarterback is willing to take a pay cut, though he would prefer something in the neighborhood of three years and $110 million, the same deal Sam Darnold got from the Seattle Seahawks:
“Rodgers, in the wake of his release by the New York Jets, is seeking an annual salary in the same general range as Darnold’s — though that’s not expected to be a major stumbling block.”
As the report notes, though, his salary figure request is not expected to hinder any deal.
The question, though, is still whether or not Minnesota wants to commit that much time and money to a 41-year-old quarterback.
