The Green Bay Packers released Aaron Jones on Monday after they signed Josh Jacobs. On Tuesday morning, Diana Russini of The Athletic reported that according to sources, Jones is expected to sign with the Packers’s rival, the Minnesota Vikings to a one-year deal worth $7 million.
This comes as a major surprise less than a day after Jones was released. He did have suitors right away, but signing with Minnesota came as a major surprise. A lot of Packers fans loved him when he was playing with Green Bay throughout his entire career.
He is 29 years old and he will be the primary running back in Minnesota’s offense. He is a major upgrade for the Vikings’ running back corps after Minnesota’s run game struggled last season. The backup running back to Jones in Minnesota will be Ty Chandler. Cam Akers is also on the roster for the Minnesota Vikings.
Former Green Bay Packers Running Back Aaron Jones Played Well Towards the End of Last Season
There were times last season when Jones was sidelined due to a hamstring injury, but he played well really toward the end of the season and into the playoffs. He rushed for over 100 yards in the final five games that he played in last season.
Jones rushed for 656 yards on 142 carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He also caught 30 passes for 233 yards and one touchdown, along with averaging 7.8 yards per reception. Jones was targeted 43 times in the passing game last season.
This isn’t the first time a former Packers player signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Wide receiver Greg Jennings and quarterback Brett Favre also played for Minnesota after playing with Green Bay for several seasons. This signing with Jones heading to the Vikings came as a major surprise to a lot of people, but it was a good fit for both parties involved.
