The Packers have put a lot of first-round talent into the defense. Some of them have worked out very well but there are a couple who have busted. One of those players that have not panned out is safety Darnell Savage. Based on the latest depth chart, Darnell Savage has officially been demoted on the Packers’ depth chart.
For the first time, the Packers’ official depth chart for Week 16 lists Darnell Savage as a backup safety in favor of Rudy Ford. He’s been demoted, which was expected after playing just one defensive snap last night.

Darnell Savage Demoted
Anyone who watched Monday night’s game isn’t surprised that Savage is now the backup to Rudy Ford on the depth chart. He only played one defensive snap and basically is now a special teams player. Some of this is the stellar play of Ford but mostly it is the horrible play of Savage. He came into the season with promise and he has not panned out. He is constantly out of position and missing tackles. For a player that showed so much promise, he really had taken a step back.
The Safety Position In General Needs An Upgrade
Savage has not been the only problem on the back end of the defense this year. Adrian Amos came into the season projected to be the leader of the defense. Like Savage, he seems to be constantly out of position and missing tackles. The Packers will probably slightly tweak most of the roster but the safety position will most likely get totally overhauled. While there have been many things wrong with the Packers’ defense this season, the play of the safeties has not helped at all.
Darnell Savage getting demoted is necessary for the Packers. It is disappointing that his play has not improved but this happens. Hopefully, the Packers can find the solution going into next year so the position is not a liability next season.
