The Milwaukee Brewers parted ways with homegrown ace Corbin Burnes in February of 2024 as they traded him to the Baltimore Orioles. Burnes is having himself another Cy Young contention-worthy season and this off-season will command top dollar as the best available starting pitcher free agent. According to a report a division rival of the Brewers is making signing Burnes their top priority.
Former Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes is having a great 2024 season with the Baltimore Orioles.
29 year old Corbin Burnes currently has a 3.10 ERA across 25 starts. He has covered 153.2 innings and has struck out 144 batters. His strikeout numbers are down this year (8.43 K:9 as opposed to 9.23 K:9 in 2023, 10.82 in 2022, and 12.61 in 2021) but he has consistently delivered on the mound. This year on just one occasion he has failed to cover at least five innings. Overall he has put himself in a good spot for a massive payday this winter.
One division rival of the Milwaukee Brewers is making signing Corbin Burnes their top off-season priority.
According to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score Corbin Burnes is the top off-season priority for the Chicago Cubs. With the amount of money Burnes is projected to make this off-season a big market team like the Cubs could be a fit for him. It also would reunite him with his former manager Craig Counsell in which they previously spent the 2018-2023 seasons together.
What could a 2025 Chicago Cubs starting rotation look like if they sign Corbin Burnes?
Of the Cubs starting pitchers Kyle Hendricks is the only impending free agent. Jameson Taillon is under contract through the 2026 season, Shota Imanaga 2025, and Justin Steele, Javier Assad, Jordan Wicks, and Hayden Wesneski are all in arbitration or pre-arbitration contract years. Adding Burnes to this group of talented arms would give them a starting rotation that would rank very high when compared to other rotations around the league.
