The Milwaukee Brewers fended off the hungry Chicago Cubs and the young Cincinnati Reds last year in their quest for the National League Central division title. Entering spring training this year the Reds had a lot of momentum and were poised to contend for a playoff spot. Those odds just took a hit as their star prospect was suspended.
Cincinnati Reds star prospect Noelvi Marte has been suspended 80 games.
Multiple MLB Insiders jumped on the news that Noelvi Marte, the Reds top ranked prospect, tested positive for a performance enhancing drug. Per MLB Pipeline Boldenone was the banned substance that he tested positive for. His punishment is an 80 game suspension without pay.
The Reds still have lots of young prospects who will challenge the Milwaukee Brewers.
Losing Marte for 80 games is a big blow for the Reds. The 22 year old made his MLB debut last year and slashed .316/.366/.456 across 123 plate appearances. Losing him means that they will have to reshuffle their infield around temporarily, but they still have players like Elly De La Cruz, Matt McClain, Spencer Steer, and Will Benson.
