When asked who the Packers all-time leading scorer is, most fans may guess a running back or wide receiver. The correct answer, though, is Mason Crosby. In fact, the player in second place is Ryan Longwell, another former kicker. The player in fourth place? Chris Jacke, a former kicker. In fact, the only player in the top four who was not a kicker is Don Hutson. To be fair, though, Hutson DID kick quite a bit in his career. He was 7/17 in his career on field goal attempts and 172/183 on extra points. But this is not about Hutson, who in my opinion is the greatest Packers player of all time. This is about Mason Crosby being named as a potential cut candidate after June 1.
Where Is This Coming From?
Mason Crosby was the first Packers player named as a potential June 1 cut candidate by Fansided. The reasoning for this is that Crosby had the second worst field goal percentage of his career in 2021. At 37 years old, there is a question to whether or not age is catching up to him. He is also due to count over $4 million against the cap next season. According to the writer, all of these things signal that the Packers may be ready to move on from Mason Crosby. As he points out, the team does have two other kickers that will compete for the job this offseason.
Will the Packers Cut Mason Crosby?
It is really hard to see Mason Crosby losing the job this season. While he is due to make over $4 million this season, the Packers would likely do more restructures and other cuts before cutting their all-time leading scorer. There were stretches last season when Crosby struggled. However, he is not far removed from a perfect 100% field goal percentage season in 2020. He was named a team captain last season (over Za’Darius Smith), so he is obviously viewed as a team leader.
And, to be honest, do they really want to cut a guy who does videos like this?
