Aaron Rodgers wants to play for the New York Jets. The Green Bay Packers want to move on to Jordan Love. The Jets want Rodgers on their team. Unfortunately, there is still some work to do regarding the details of a trade, with New York wanting some kind of compensation built in just in case Rodgers decides not to play in 2024. Today at the annual NFL owners’ meetings, Jets owner Woody Johnson was asked about how he was feeling in regards to the ongoing talks. While he insists that they are being patient, he also said that they were “anxious.”
The New York Jets Are Anxious to Get Aaron Rodgers
Woody Johnson, Jets general manager Joe Douglas, head coach Robert Selah, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett all visited Aaron Rodgers earlier this offseason to discuss the possibility of him playing in New York. Coach Selah has already publicly stated that Zach Wilson, their young quarterback who was thrown to the wolves last season, will spend the year as their backup quarterback. Allen Lazard was signed to a four-year $44 million contract. It is 1000% clear that the Jets have honed in on Rodgers to be their starting quarterback in 2023.
When asked about the situation at the NFL owner’s meetings, Johnson gave some interesting responses. One question was regarding when he and his staff found out that Rodgers wanted to play for them:
Woody Johnson, speaking to a few reporters, on the reaction when Aaron Rodgers said he wanted to play for the #Jets: “I know that the reaction of the building was pretty high and everybody was pretty excited about having a player of that caliber.” #Jets

Regarding having to wait for a trade to get done, Johnson said:
Woody Johnson on waiting for Rodgers: "I think we’re anxious. We’re anxious, I guess. We look forward. We’re optimistic. We have a plan. We’re willing to stick with our plan. I don’t think anybody is hyperventilating."

That doesn’t mean, however, that Johnson is having an easy time waiting:
Woody Johnson: “I’m not the patient sort. We’re in the win business. We have to win now.” #Jets

This is going to continue to be a wild offseason.
