An NFL executive sees Aaron Rodgers staying in the midwest
An NFL executive thinks Aaron Rodgers could be heading to the AFC South for 2023. Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers will have discussions in the coming weeks about their plans for next season. Rodgers could retire, play for the Packers, or be traded to another team.
Most analysts think Rodgers will be wearing Green and Gold next September, though there is much skepticism about whether that’s the best move for the Packers. There have been rumors about potential trade options for Rodgers. The New York Jets are a popular team linked to Rodgers via a trade this offseason.
Jeremy Fowler with ESPN recently wrote an article about what NFL executives are predicting would happen in the next few months. Fowler quoted one executive who thinks the Jets are a good fit for Rodgers. Another (anonymous) NFL executive thought the Indianapolis Colts could offer a trade package for the four-time MVP quarterback:
“One NFC executive brought up an interesting team that’s sort of random but would make some sense on paper: Indianapolis. The Colts enter the offseason with $20.6 million in cap space. They absolutely need a quarterback. Despite a four-win season, the roster is not void of talent, especially on defense. And Indy owns the fourth overall pick, an easy dangling point in a potential deal with Green Bay.
“[Indianapolis general manager Chris] Ballard has to get one [a quarterback] and get it right,” the executive said. “Maybe they just draft one and save the money, but Rodgers would be different than their other past stopgap options because he’s more of a sure thing.
The Colts?
It’s hard to see Rodgers going to Indianapolis next season. The Colts will be a few pieces away from a Super Bowl run. Rodgers won’t want to go there. And Rodgers, because of his contract, has the power to nix any trade he finds unfavorable. Besides Rodgers’ wishes to stop the trade, the Colts have an unfavorable cap situation.
