Brewers’ fans had much to lament this off-season as they saw Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal signed with other clubs. Conjecture was that the Brewers would soon miss out on Christian Yelich as well. Some fans called for his trade for prospects before the team could get nothing for him as a free agent.
Well, Brewers’ fans, rejoice! Multiple sources have said that the Brewers and Yelich have reached a $200 million+ deal that will keep the 2018 MVP in Milwaukee for the long run. It is unclear whether or not the new deal will include the two years Yelich has left on his current contract, which he signed with Marlins prior to his trade to the Brewers. The new deal is rumored to be for 7 years.
Yelich was acquired by the Brewers prior to the 2018 season. He made an instant impact in Milwaukee with a slash line of .326/.402/.598 to go along with 36 home runs and 110 RBI’s. He won the NL MVP that year, as well as the batting title. His OPS of 1.000 also led the league.
In 2019, Yelich finished second in the MVP voting. His season was cut short due to a fractured knee cap, which he suffered after fouling a ball off his knee. He still finished the season hitting .329/.429/.671 with 44 home runs and 97 RBI’s. He won the batting title once again that season. In addition, his OBP and OPS were the highest in the league.
