NBA news: The NBA Summer League is an opportunity for young players to showcase their skillset with the hope of earning a spot in their respective team’s opening night roster. Well, this is exactly what a pair of Detroit Pistons rookies did in the summer tournament.
On Friday, new Pistons coach Monty Williams watched his boys log a 79-73 victory over a San Antonio Spurs side that was missing the services of Victor Wembanyama. At this point, it’s safe to say that the new Detroit shot-caller liked what he saw in rookies Ausar Thompson and Marcus Sasser.
NBA News: Monty Williams Left Very Impressed By Rookies Ausar Thompson, Marcus Sasser
Coach Williams was asked to share his thoughts on the strong performances of his two young studs, and it appears that the 51-year-old was in a jovial mood. So much so, that his high praise for Thompson and Sasser ended up with a bizarre arranged marriage proposal:
“I’ve become a fan of Ausar and Sass,” said Williams. “Their toughness, we saw it down the stretch. Those two guys just made play after play and played winning basketball, which is something that makes me want to take them home and arrange a marriage with my daughters.”
Monty Williams is wild for saying this on ESPN.

I’m not exactly sure Williams’ daughters are going to like their dad’s joke here. What you can say without a shadow of a doubt, though, is that the new Pistons play-caller is a big fan of his young rooks.
NBA News: Can Pistons Challenge Milwaukee Bucks This Season?
At 17-65, the Detroit Pistons held the worst record in the Central Division last season. They ended up more than a few games behind the division winners, the Milwaukee Bucks, who finished with 58 wins in 2022-23. In fact, the Pistons had the worst record in the entire league last season.
While Detroit made a few noteworthy additions this summer — including Ausar Thompson and Marcus Sasser — it doesn’t seem like their fate will change significantly this coming season. They’re probably going to win more than 17 games, but I just don’t see them challenging the Bucks for the Central Division title this year. At least not yet.
