Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers are primed for what could be the craziest offseason for the franchise in years. Aaron Rodgers is rumored to be on his way out of town via a trade and Jordan Love would then take over as the starting quarterback. While that’s all speculation, the rumors are at an all-time high.
No matter who the Packers roll with at quarterback, they will need to build a better offense around them. One potential need could be adding a tight end in free agency. Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis are quality players and keeping Tonyan in town would be smart, but even adding a second tight end would be wise for two tight end sets.
Some have speculated that the Packers could look to select Notre Dame standout Michael Mayer in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. However, there are plenty of talented players the Packers could target at No. 15 overall.
With all of that being said, let’s dive in and take a look at three options the Packers could consider pursuing in NFL free agency.
Three Potential Tight End Free Agency Targets For The Packers
3. Robert Tonyan
Let’s just start off this list with an obvious option for the Packers. Bringing Tonyan back is likely something the franchise would be very interested in doing. He came back strong this season and put up good numbers on and offense that struggled mightily throughout the season.
Tonyan ended up catching 53 passes for 470 yards and two touchdowns on the season. The numbers may not seem great, but across the the board the Packers’ numbers were lower. He also came back from a torn ACL and proved that he is still more than capable of playing at a high level.
At 28 years of age, Tonyan still has a lot of good football left in him. He knows Matt LaFleur’s system and fits well into it. Green Bay should strongly consider giving their current starting tight end a new contract.

2. Dalton Schultz
Next up, the Packers could consider pursuing an impeding Dallas Cowboys’ free agent in Dalton Schultz. It would be a big addition to an offense that needs more security blankets for either Rodgers or Love.
Schultz is coming off of a 2022 season that saw his numbers dip from the year previous. The Dallas offense did not run through him nearly as much, but he still caught 57 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns. Back in 2021, Schultz racked up 78 catches for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.
Heading into the offseason, Schultz is just 26 years of age. That alone should intrigue a team like the Packers who could be heading into a new era of re-tooling the roster. Schultz could easily slide in as a long-term fit alongside Love for the Packers.
1. Evan Engram
Finally, we’re going to look at a player who has been a rumored target for the Packers over the last few years. Evan Engram is a name that has been connected to Green Bay repeatedly, but nothing has come to fruition. It would be smart to take a look at signing him in free agency.
Engram completely rejuvenated his career with the Jaguars in 2022. The 6-foot-3 and 240-pound tight end possesses a ton of athleticism and speed for his position. He racked up 73 receptions for 766 yards and four scores for Jacksonville this season.
Just like Tonyan, Engram is currently 28 years old. He still has some great football ahead of him and would add a nice dynamic to the Packers’ offense. If Green Bay wants to make a change from Tonyan, Engram could be the perfect route to go.
