Heading into Sunday’s game, the Milwaukee Brewers were ready to leave Detroit with a three-game sweep against the Tigers.
But, this is baseball, and anything is possible.
With the Brewers facing Tarik Skubal and them having Bryse Wilson on the mound, the crew came up short, getting clobbered 10-2 at Comerica Park.
A Tough Day for Bryse Wilson and the Milwaukee Brewers
Going into Sunday, Wilson had an ERA of 2.76. All that quickly changed when he was hit hard, allowing seven runs over four innings of work. Giving up a pair of runs in the first inning, everything seemed to go downhill from there, then finding himself giving up five of the Tigers’ eight runs in the fifth inning.
Despite giving up those runs, Wilson felt that he had the best command all season.
“Gave up two in the first but honestly I feel like that’s the best command I’ve had all season,” Wilson said per Cyrt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “That’s just how the game goes. We’ll learn from it and hopefully carry that command onto the next one.”
Hoby Milner came in for Wilson, but things didn’t seem to get any better as he gave up a two-run single to Zach McKinstry that helped push Detroit’s lead to six. Andy Ibanez hit an RBI single, and then Jake Rogers smashed a three-run homer.
Wilson ended his day with seven earned runs on six hits, and two walks. His ERA rose from 3.35 to 4.19.
The Brewers were hoping to get some runs scored when Willy Adames led off the second with a single and Blake Perkins responded with a bunt single with one out. After a strikeout issued to Jackson Chourio, Andruw Monasterio came to the plate, but hit a line drive right to Gio Urshela at third base and their scoring hopes in the second were done.
On the Tigers side of things, Skubal only gave up one run over six innings of work, striking out ten and only walked two; His ERA lowered to 1.92, and his now 96 strikeouts lead the league. He’s only reached double-digit strikeouts six times in his career, and his fastball was recorded as high as 101.7 mph on Sunday.
“I like to strike guys out,” Skubal said. “I think every pitcher would say that. And if they say no, they’re lying.”
A Day off for William Contreras
Contreras got the day off on Sunday, snapping a streak of 101 consecutive games played – all starts. In the last 12 games, Contreras has been hitting .157, so the day off was well-needed.
Next up For the Brewers
Despite the loss on Sunday, the Brewers still came out on top with a series win, 2-1 in Detroit. They’ll head back home to Milwaukee to take on the Toronto Blue Jays with Colin Rea take on Jose Berrios starting at 7:10PM.
