The defense for the Green Bay Packers will need to be better in 2024. Switching from a 3-4 scheme to a 4-3 scheme is going to take time, but the change in the end will hopefully be worth it. This defense was not a very good unit a season ago.
The Green Bay Packers also made changes to the defensive personnel during the offseason. One of the biggest moves they made on defense was signing safety Xavier McKinney from the New York Giants. They also used their second-round picks on linebacker Edgerrin Copper from Texas A&M and Javon Bullard from Georgia.
Green Bay hopes seven-round selection Kevin King from Penn State can make the roster at the cornerback position. It was the only cornerback they selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Pro Football Focus Has Green Bay Packers Defensive Lineman Karl Brooks As a Breakout Candidate For the 2024 Season
In the 4-3 scheme for the Packers defense, Devonte Wyatt and Kenny Clark will be the starting defensive tackles. However, Karl Brooks is listed with the second-unit for the Green Bay Packers and he has a chance to shine during his second NFL season.
Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus thinks that second-year player Karl Brooks has a chance to break out this season and was named to the 2024 all-breakout team. McGuinness said about Brooks:
“If there is a question about Brooks’ play heading into his second NFL season, it’s whether he can be a full-time player or if he is simply more of a pass-rushing specialist. However, with how good he was in that role as a rookie, that may not matter. He had seven games in 2023 with a PFF pass-rushing grade above 70.0.”
Brooks was a sixth-round selection (179th overall pick) in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Bowling Green. Last season with the Green Bay Packers, he recorded 20 tackles, four sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and four pass deflections.
He is just 24 years old and it will be interesting to see how often Karl Brooks will see the field this season for the Green Bay Packers. If Brooks has a big season for Green Bay, it will be interesting to see whether or not they will give Kenny Clark a contract extension.
Clark is entering the final year of his deal and the emergence of Karl Brooks could force the Green Bay Packers to move on from Kenny Clark. Devonte Wyatt is signed for the next couple of seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
