The Wisconsin football program has finished their first camp practice ahead of the upcoming season and it was a good one for the team.
During the recent Big Ten Conference media day, the Wisconsin team and football staff expressed how they need to get better all around the upcoming season. In one short showing to start off the year, Wisconsin looked more fluid and well rounded as they embark upon another season under an experienced staff. On the first day already, some players looked to be putting themselves on the radar of the Wisconsin staff.
Wisconsin Football Camp Kicks Off Ahead of Tough Upcoming Season
The Wisconsin football team and staff have traveled to Platteville, Wisconsin for the next two weeks as they open up their preseason camp. The Badgers finished last season with a 7-6 record, and have since changed many of the practice and recovery procedures surrounding the team.
Wisconsin football Head Coach Luke Fickell is prepared to turn his team around in year two after failing to hit his own lofty expectations last season. Fickell was critical of his team and himself a year ago, stating the Badgers need to “do better” at all three phases of football. The first step for the Wisconsin staff is knocking their preseason camp out of the park and putting the team into a much more prepared position compared to last season.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Keeping Close Eye on Two Dynamic Players
Throughout the first day of practice, Wisconsin took most of their reps slow and made sure they loosened themselves up. The Wisconsin football staff is trying to take things slow and make sure they focus on the basics after struggling with simple things last season.
During the first day, two players in particular stood out as the Badgers staff continues to figure out what the role is for every player. Both running back Tawee Walker and cornerback Xavier Lucas both do not have spots or playing time guaranteed to them this upcoming season. Instead, each player is working to prove themselves on the practice field in hopes of it translating over to the game field.
Walker, who transferred over from Oklahoma this off-season, has been someone Wisconsin is still trying to decide on how to use moving forward. Presumed starting running back Chez Mellusi described Walker as the “…thunder to my lightning” when speaking about the fellow back recently. Walker has displayed a nice set of hands and solid field vision which likely will land him a spot as the change-of-pace back.
In the case of Lucas, the young defensive back is still working to prove himself, but has already secured the seal of approval from his teammates.
Can the True Freshman Xavier Lucas Make an Impact This Upcoming Season?
One of the biggest storylines early on to watch out for is the one regarding freshman cornerback Xavier Lucas. Lucas, a Florida native, was recruited as a three-star prospect and joined Wisconsin over Miami (FL) and Florida State. During the recent Big Ten Conference media day, fellow cornerback and Wisconsin football superstar Ricardo Hallman stated, “I don’t know how they let that man out of Florida.”
Lucas has shown on the field during a short period of time around the Wisconsin football staff that he is more than capable enough to hold his own. The dynamic cornerback plays intelligent football and plays football at a speed that many other players cannot. The ability of Lucas to dissect plays and make something happen before the offense can breakaway.
While Wisconsin has plenty of depth at every defensive back position, it is hard to see a world where Lucas does not find his way onto the field in some capacity this season.
