The No. 17 Wisconsin basketball avoided what would have been a painful loss last Saturday, as they escaped with a 75-69 win over the Northwestern Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois.
The Badgers can thank seldom-used senior Carter Gilmore for their success against the unranked Big Ten opponent. Gilmore came off the bench and gave Wisconsin basketball a big lift, scoring 15 points on 5-for-17 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers on five attempts from behind the arc.
Wisconsin was down six points at the half but a 14-3 run in the second half allowed the Badgers to take control of the lead the rest of the way.
Tonje hilariously wants a statue of Gilmore after Northwestern game
Gilmore’s unexpected eruption in the Northwestern game has earned him lots of attention.
In a post on Instagram by Big Ten Men’s Basketball highlighting Gilmore’s memorable performance, Wisconsin star senior John Tonje jokingly demanded a sculpture made in the likeness of his teammate.
“Statue now,” wrote Tonje, who top-scored for Wisconsin with 27 points on 8-for-18 shooting versus the Wildcats.

A loss to Northwestern would have been the Badgers’ sixth Quadrant 1 defeat in the 2024-25 college basketball season for Greg Gard’s team. Instead, the Badgers improved to 6-5 in Quadrant 1 games.
Wisconsin, which is 17-5 overall and 7-4 in Big Ten play, will next square off against the Indiana Hoosiers at Kohl Center in Madison on Tuesday.
