The Wisconsin basketball program announced their signing of another international player yesterday, which could certainly boost the team.
Riccardo Greppi, a 6-foot-10-inch forward/center from Italy, has signed his letter of intent with the Wisconsin basketball program. Greppi was a solid player for his home team of Verona in the Italy-NextGen League, which essentially is the equivalent of the G-League. With Greppi joining the roster, it is a good time now to breakdown and fully view the skills that the new Badger possesses.
Wisconsin Basketball Lands International Center Riccardo Greppi of Italy
The Wisconsin basketball staff has landed yet another international player, this time hailing from Italy as center Riccardo Greppi has signed his letter of intent. Greppi will be available and ready to play for Wisconsin this upcoming season and seems prepared to make an impact for the Badgers.
Greppi was a member of the U18 Italy squad and averaged 2.3 points in 12.3 minutes per game of action. The center found plenty more success this past year with his Verona squad in the Italy-NextGen League. Greppi averaged 9.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and shot 39.7% from the field during eight games of play.
What Does Greppi Offer the Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Team on the Court?
Wisconsin has been in love with landing experienced, intelligent international as of late between Hayden Jones, Andrija Vukovic, and now Greppi. One thing that all three athletes have in common is that each player was able to crack the highest-level of play in their respective country. While none of the three particularly dominated at that level, they all have that level of experience that the Wisconsin staff wants.
Greppi is a long, physical center that is able to score in a variety of ways close to the basket. The center has displayed a great jump-shot as well, but is still working to develop his range and attempt shots from farther away. One thing offensively that Greppi has also been working on is his consistency and his handling of the basketball as well.
Greppi averaged 9.1 points per game last season for Verona but shot 39.7% from the floor despite the majority of his looks coming in or around the paint. Greppi also averaged 2.4 turnovers per game this past season, which led his team in the unfortunate category. The center needs to improve upon his shooting consistency and avoid forcing the basketball moving forward in order to correct his offensive issues.
Can Greppi Crack the Starting Lineup Early on For Wisconsin?
Judging solely on what Greppi has done in the past on the court, then the recruit has a shot at making the starting lineup for Wisconsin this upcoming season. While Greppi has not practiced with the team yet nor has Head Coach Greg Gard gotten a true look at the center, Greppi has raw skills that Wisconsin lacks.
Between his natural rebounding ability and his excellent positioning on the court, Greppi puts himself in a position to succeed. The question is going to be whether or not he is able to develop the consistency needed to succeed at the collegiate level. The center struggled previously to stay consistent, but if he finds consistency in Madison he should become a lock for excellent playing time.
