The Wisconsin basketball team suffered a potentially difficult setback against Nebraska, but can they make-up for it?
The Wisconsin Badgers are set to take on the visiting Purdue Boilermakers in Madison on Sunday, February 4th. After suffering an overtime loss to the Cornhuskers in Nebraska a few days ago, Wisconsin must regain their focus and move onto their upcoming challenge. The Boilermakers are currently one of the top teams in the country, and pose an opportunity for the Badgers to prove themselves ahead of March.
Wisconsin Basketball Preparing Greatly For Purdue Boilermakers Incoming Visit
A season ago when these two teams faced off against each other, the Badgers put some of their best basketball on display. Wisconsin basketball was able to force Purdue out of their normal rhythm on offense and kept the Boilermakers off balance on the defensive side. Wisconsin made sure the Boilermakers had no chance at making or taking good, open looks when shooting which ultimately disrupted Purdue.
The Badgers could not hold onto a lead however, and lost to the Boilermakers 63-61 in Madison.
A Look Ahead: How can Wisconsin Basketball Survive the Boilermakers?
While Wisconsin basketball lost their matchup against the Boilermakers a year ago, there is still plenty the Badgers can take away from the game. Some things have not changed for Purdue, such as their dominant big man Zach Edey, who is second in the country in scoring with 23.4 points per game.
Edey has been the heart and soul of the Purdue team for some time now. In his game against Wisconsin a season ago, Edey got off to a slow start and that allowed the Badgers to keep themselves in the game. The biggest key to victory for Wisconsin basketball will be limiting Edey, which is also their biggest challenge.
If Wisconsin can force other players to shoot the ball, or prevent Edey from taking over, they have a great shot at beating Purdue. Edey is a massive presence on the court and completely shutting him down is something nobody has had success doing in the past. The most Wisconsin basketball can do is limit his production and match it with their own offense.
Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Still Aiming to Prove Themselves as a ‘Great’ Team
The word ‘Great’ can mean many different versions of successful depending on who is asked. For example, a dominant team like Purdue, UConn, or the old school Duke teams can be considered great due to their overall dominance on the court. However, to some, you cannot be great based on how you are winning but rather based upon what you win.
For the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team, this could certainly become the case for the rest of the season. While Wisconsin has soared in the rankings and beat other tough ranked teams, they have still suffered ugly losses to teams that should have been rolled over. The Badgers will need to win the Big Ten Conference Tournament, or make a run in March to try and solidify themselves as a great team.
