Wisconsin basketball senior forward Carter Gilmore is averaging only 3.5 points per game in the 2024-25 college season, but on Saturday night, he more than tripled that average as he provided the Badgers a needed spark off the bench to help his team come away with a 75-69 come-from-behind victory over the Northwestern Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Illinois.
Wisconsin basketball relied on unlikely hero in win vs. Northwestern
Wisconsin basketball was down at the half by six points and trailed the Wildcats by two at one point in the second half before a 14-3 salvo by the Badgers turned things around in favor of Greg Gard’s team.
Gilmore poured in seven points during that crucial stretch and ended up with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc. In addition, Gilmore, who only had 17 points in his previous five games and had not scored more than seven in a contest this season before Saturday, recorded seven rebounds and an assist in the meeting with Northwestern.
“Just to see the amount of love that you really have. That’s why I play,” Gilmore said after the game (h/t Mark Stewart of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). “I’m a true Wisconsin Badger and all I want to do is make all the fans happy. I was lucky and glad I could do that today for sure.”
It is also worth noting that Gilmore’s follow-up bucket off a missed shot by John Tonje with over nine minutes left in regulation gave the Badgers their first taste of the lead against Northwestern.
Tonje paced the Badgers with 27 points while Max Klesmit and Nolan Winter had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Up next for Wisconsin is a game against the Indiana Hoosiers on Tuesday in Madison.
