Np. 11 Wisconsin basketball suffered its first loss of the 2024-25 season on Tuesday, as they fell prey to Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines at Kohl Center in Madison via a 67-64 score.
Although not known for its 3-point shooting prowess, the Badgers were still hurt by their poor performance from behind the arc against Michigan, as Wisconsin basketball shot just 6-for-27 from behind the arc. Badger head coach Greg Gard rued the cold 3-point shooting of his team, which made it easier for the Wolverines to defend the interior.
Via Mark Stewart of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
“We needed to knock down some threes so we could spread the floor a little more,” Gard said. “And when we can spread the floor a little more we can attack gaps and that allows us to get to the free throw line a little more. …
“I thought we had good looks. I didn’t think they were all great, but typically we’re going to shoot 25 to 30 a game and obviously you’ve got to hit a clip that is better than 6 for 27.”
Wisconsin basketball’s offense went cold vs. Michigan
Prior to the Michigan game, the Badgers, who are 25th in the nation with an adjusted offensive rating of 116.9, hit 10 of their 30 attempts from the 3-point region in a 74-53 win over the Chicago State Cougars last Saturday at home but they failed to be as decent in their Big Ten play opener.
Wisconsin basketball was also hurt by poor shooting from the foul line where the Badgers went just 14-for-19. On the season, Wisconsin is No. 1 in the nation with an 85.2 free throw shooting percentage but that simply did not manifest opposite the Wolverines, who were 15-for-21 from the charity stripe…
Now 8-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play, the Badger will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday against the No. 5 Marquette Golden Eagles at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
