There are five freshmen in the current Wisconsin Badgers basketball team, with one redshirting. Although these guys don’t play much despite their 3-star designation, assistant coach Lance Randall says they are part of a bigger plan, something he helped in building a blueprint.
Randall was hired by the University of Wisconsin-Madison athletics department in May before the start of the 2024-2025 NCAA basketball season.
Since then, he was able to stamp his signature coaching style, starting with scouting.
In an interview with Badger Blitz, the 52-year-old detailed his recruitment strategies and how UW made it easy for him.
“You could get a really impactful player in the spring if you were disciplined and you held back some scholarships,” he said.
“You had a way better understanding of what your team needs versus trying to guess two years out and getting a commitment from a rising junior and saying this is going to be you in three years. It was a good balance for us to build our team with freshmen and some spring transfers from Division 1 and Division 2.”
Randall started the season with 10 scholarships at hand, to be given to quality players who are willing to commit to the Badgers.
Wisconsin Badgers found a winning assistant in Lance Randall
This is just Randall’s first year with the team but his impact in developing players and helping head coach Greg Gard is very much felt.
Randall can hire great players. That is something the Badgers are great at, too, with him joining the staff.
Randall has already won a lot before Wisconsin.
He was the head coach of Division II program Saint Leo University where he is the all-time winningest coach. He did the same thing with Lindenwood University (NCAA Div. II) and Webster University (NCAA Div. III) before leaving.
With him together with Gard at the helm, Badgers will remain competitive.
