The Wisconsin Badgers have one of the greatest college football traditions in the Nation. Every Badger fan, in the stadium or at home, knows exactly what is going to happen between the third and fourth quarters. “Jump Around” first happened during the 1993 football season with the men’s swim team smuggling in a megaphone and Discman and playing the song to rile up sections O and P. In 1998 it became a regular tradition, now 25 years later the tradition is still going strong.
“Jump Around Tradition” Has Become A Staple Of Wisconsin Football
The song features a distinctive horn fanfare intro, sampled from Bob & Earl’s 1963 track “Harlem Shuffled.” The moment that horn blares, the crowd is immediately sent into a frenzy. For the next few minutes the city of Madison creates a manmade earthquake that has even registered on the richter scale. UW’s geoscience department wanted to see just how much seismic activity it creates. Sensitive motion detectors were set up in and around the stadium and they in fact show increased up and down motion in the stadium.
The jam cheers on Wisconsin fans and the football team while striking fear into the hearts of Wisconsin’s enemies. As fate would have it, the very first enemy “Jump Around” ever intimidated was a pre-NFL Drew Brees and his Purdue Boilermakers. Below are a few videos of that iconic moment:
College Football Traditions: The Badger marketing team was looking for “high energy” songs to get the crowd involved between quarters. Wisconsin started using Jump Around by House of Pain at the start of the fourth quarter in 1998, and it’s been used ever since. pic.twitter.com/cY3l3FbtRJ
