The Wisconsin Badgers football’s defensive line for the 2025 season continues to take shape as Jamal Howard decided he will stay with the team.
Howard retracted his previous decision to enter the transfer portal in December after he spent the last season on a redshirt
“After meaningful talks with my family and staff, I’m grateful to the University of Wisconsin for helping me grow as a player and person,” he wrote back then.
“With that I’m entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility.”
His old decision to enter transfer portal was a huge blow to the team’s defensive line when most of his peers also decided they want to leave.
The team core was initially left with just Trech Kekahuna, tight end Tucker Ashcraft, inside linebackers Christian Alliegro and Tyler Jansey.
Jamal Howard with increased role?
Howard, a three-star recruit from high school, is one of the next good defenders head coach Luke Fickell is developing.
Scouts were high on the 6’3, 320 lbs defender. He ranked No. 1,213 player in the class of 2023 and No. 130 defensive lineman and No. 26 recruit.
His re-commitment to the Badgers means more development for him under Fickell. He still has three years of eligibility.
He might see more minutes from now on with James Thompson Jr. and Curt Neal already committing to a rival school after entering the transfer portal in December.
Howard will join a defensive line that is already lined with experience after the signing of Charles Perkins from UT-Martin, Jay’Viar Suggs from LSU, Corey Walker from Western Michigan, and Parker Petersen from (Tulane).
