Wisconsin Badgers basketball head coach Greg Gard has declared February 1 as the Carter Gilmore Day for the school after his huge game in win against the Northern Wildcats.
Gilmore, now a senior, finally got his shining moment for the team he first played for in the 2020-2021 season.
It is great that he decided to be patient, just kept on waiting for his time. If he did not he would not have this euphoric week.
Talking to The Zone Madison. Gilmore revealed that there was a time when he almost decided to transfer to another, mostly because he was just a walk-on, which means he was not offered a scholarship.
He’s been with the team four seasons and this year, he remains a walk-on, something that he contemplated about at one point.
“I’m a walk-on this year, too. So they gave scholarship to other guys. I was like ‘Alright. Do I go somewhere else. Get a scholarship. Get my school paid for? Do I come back here?’
Good thing for Badgers fans, he consulted the right people.
“So after talking to my family, I was like, I knew I had to come prove myself. That’s when I’m at my best. So, I came back here again. That was probably the closest I’ve been to thinking about transferring or doing something like that. My heart was here. I knew it’s in my purpose to be here.”
Carter Gilmore embodies a true Wisconsin Badger
Gilmore scored 15 points in the win over Northwestern, all of them in the second half.
When they were getting nothing out of the usual suspects in scoring, he was there to step up while also providing top notch defense.
Gard is one proud coach.
“Carter Gilmore, what a great example of why someone is a Wisconsin Badger. All you locals know his story, from walk-on to today,” the coach said after the game.
“He’s come the long, hard way, and really proud of him that he’s persevered and continued to stay with it. When that happens, good things happen to people who really work hard and stay the course.”
As for Gilmore, what does he think about his breakout game? It is still about the fans.
“Just to see the amount of love that you really have, that’s why I play, and I’m a true Wisconsin Badger. All I want to do is make the fans happy, so I was lucky and glad that I could do that today for sure.”
