Wisconsin Badgers alum and Eagles linebacker Zach Baun has been named NFL
AP Defensive Player of the Year finalist. Also nominated were Browns defensive tackle Myles Garrett, Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, Broncos cornerback Patrick Curtain and Steelers linebacker TJ Watt.
Baun was picked by the New Orleans Saints in the 2020 NFL Draft at No. 74. He had 12.5 sacks, 76 tackles, 20 tackles for losses and one interception in his senior season at Wisconsin.
Zach Baun Being a Smart Offseason Move by Howie Roseman
What a signing by Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, with great coaching and player development spearheaded by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Baun is a huge reason for the defense being so dominant.
Howie signed Baun to a $3.5 million deal. With the Saints, he was more of a pass rusher. The Eagles developed him into an off-ball linebacker, and he also became a 1st-Team All-Pro.
Baun’s Statistics and Production This Season for Philadelphia
Zack Baun is third in the NFL in tackles and second in the NFL in forced fumbles. He also has 3.5 sacks and one interception on the #1 total defense in football.
This is a very interesting year to have DPOY. Nobody puts up dominant numbers against a dominant defense, though there is certainly a case for some of the other guys that were nominated and are worthy of the award.
