First baseman Spencer Torkelson has a future that is in question as a member of the Detroit Tigers as the team recently signed Gleyber Torres to a one year, $15 million deal. Subsequently, GM Scott Harris announced that infielder Colt Kieth will move to first base. This makes the former #1 overall pick Torkelson the odd man out and he could be a trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Spencer Torkelson has had mixed MLB results as a member of the Detroit Tigers
After being selected first overall in the 2020 MLB draft out of Arizona State University, Spencer Torkelson wasted no time getting to the big leagues as he debuted in 2022, but slashed just .203/.285/.319 across 110 games his rookie season. A year later, he broke out by mashing 31 home runs and collecting 94 RBI, but last year he again struggled. Across three seasons, the 25 year old has a career .221/.300/.392 slash line. Defensively, he has not excelled as Fangraphs gives him a career -9 outs above average (OAA) that includes a -7 OAA during his 2023 campaign.
What kind of trade value does Spencer Torkelson have?
Trading away a former #1 overall pick won’t come cheaply, but there is one notable factor, aside from his lackluster offense a season ago and overall negative defensive game play, that is worth pointing out when accessing his value. That is the fact that he has just one minor league option remaining, making 2025 a critical, near make-or-break year for whichever team he plays for next season. While he won’t be arbitration-eligible until 2026 and theoretically remains under team control through 2029, a big part of his future hinges on how he performs in the upcoming season.
Would Spencer Torkelson be a fit on the Milwaukee Brewers?
The Brewers currently are entering the 2025 season with Rhys Hoskins as their primary first basemen. He’s coming off a season where he established numerous new career lows at the plate, but still has the potential to rebound. Mixing Spencer Torkelson in could work and provide friendly competition between the two, but Torkelson’s defensive profile and lack of minor league options may ultimately be two major deciding factors as to if the Brew Crew want to pursue him via trade or not.
