Former Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes currently remains a free agent.  As the best available player remaining to be signed, his decision as to where to go will have a domino effect on multiple other ball clubs.  While it would seem like the cards are in his hands, an Insider has indicated that he is still seeking a deal that would give him the third largest guaranteed amount of money in MLB history.

How much money is former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes seeking in free agency?

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Corbin Burnes is looking for a deal that would at least guarantee him $245 million.  This would be the third largest guaranteed amount of money in MLB history for a pitcher.  Realistically, Burnes’ agent Scott Boras would negotiate for a contract that was just over that sum in order to ensure that Burnes holds sole possession of the third largest guaranteed deal for a pitcher.

What are the largest guaranteed deals for pitchers in MLB history?

Currently, Stephen Strasburg holds the third largest guaranteed deal in MLB history with $245 million.  Above him is Gerrit Cole’s $324 million contract and Yoshinobu Yamamoto at $325 million.  Other pitchers in the $200 million club (total value of the contract) are Justin Verlander with $219.5 million, David Price with $217 million, Zack Greinke with $206.5 million, and CC Sabathia with $202 million.  Two-way player Shohei Ohtani would also technically fall into this group as well.

Mark Feinsand also wrote that the San Francisco Giants have a standing offer on the table for Corbin Burnes.  It seems likely that this offer doesn’t surpass $245 million given the report of him seeking a deal of that value, but the exact details on this offer are unknown.  Other teams consistently mentioned in Burnes rumors include the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles.
